Why is this blog here?

On his blog “eLearning technology” Tony Karrer has his ten top reasons for blogging, most of which line up pretty well for my reasons in starting up “just how are you teaching them?”

Hopefully, this blog will start some networking happening, and then we can get into all sorts of interesting discussions – and hopefully learn something. Unlike my other blog, which is just a mish-mash of stuff on the net that makes me giggle, I do actually intend to make this one a little more high-brow and research-driven.

I’m getting bored with just being a ‘producer’ of content – and this blog gives me an opportunity to get those thoughts I have about the whole idea of classroom and teaching technologies into an open forum for dissemination and discussion.
And I’ve also had a few teachers over the years who were just downright abysmal in the way that they attempted to get us (their students) using it.

Aside: Sitting a class of 30 15-year old males down in a computer lab and telling them to “Google your assignment” is NOT an effective use of ICT!

So! Coming up – critiques of current NSW education policy regarding technology, interrogation of the rights/responsibilities that come with letting students engage with ICTs, and most importantly, ideas about how to use the things in the most effective way.

Technology is a tool for teaching, not a replacement.
